You can camp in an organised site or somewhere that simply takes your fancy.  But there are some considerations that need to be taken into account before you commit to a camping site.Here we look at the art of selecting one that suits you.

You can’t pre-order a suitable campsite.One that suits some people and tents may not be right for you.  However, there are some basics that you should be aware of before you set up your tents for the night.

A campsite can mean two different things.First there are organised sites with added extras such as toilets, showers, a shop and maybe even washing machines.If this appeals, remember the more facilities, the more people, so the bigger sites can be busy and noisy.  Some very large sites may have a bar or entertainment block, which could be noisy at night.If you like socialising this may suit you well, but if not a quieter campsite may be just what you need.

The second type of campsite that you will come across is a site that you choose to pitch your camping tents, which is not an organised campsite.  This may be in a farmer’s field or a wide piece of open land.If it’s a field always get permission.Never assume you can pitch your tent there – some farmers don’t allow camping and get irate at people who make assumptions.

The middle of nowhere is lovely and quite, but can be short of water supplies for washing and drinking.Even if you have bottled water, keep water in mind.Remember also the toilet facilities.Remember toilets, especially if there is a nearby pub!

Don’t pitch tent in a valley due to the flooding risk.Also be careful of water – lakes, rivers and canals can attract rats and insects.
