Is It Cool Or Tacky To Wear Black On The Ski Slopes?

Congratulations! You have finally made the decision to buy a ski helmet. It is always a good idea to protect your head. You need your brain for so many things! Buying your helmet probably was not an easy task. There were a lot of things to consider.

You probably gave some thought to price and quality. Though even the cheapest protective headgear must pass certain standards tests, there is still a big difference in prices and features. The practical side of you wanted to get the best quality for the best price.

You probably spent even more time agonizing over the look of your helmet than you did over its effectiveness. The aerodynamic features were only one of your considerations. In fact, the wind sheer factor probably took a distant second place to the cool look of an aerodynamically designed helmet.

Then there was the color. You knew perfectly well that the color was not going to have anything to do with how well it worked, but that did not stop you from spending as much time or more making a color decision as you had spent on your other decisions.

Strange thoughts probably came into your head regarding color. Would a red one be too radical looking? Would a steel grey one stand out enough? Would it go with the rest of your ski outfit? You probably even wondered if it would clash with your black sport watch or if that even mattered.

You were really attracted to the black helmet, but maybe spent hours before making your decision. Black is the color of Darth Vader, you thought. Black is the color Goths choose. Black doesn’t suit your personality, but that helmet looks so cool! What to do?

No worries! That black one is not going to make people think you’re a Goth or a Star Wars geek. Just avoid wearing all black and you will be okay. If you have a white or colored ski parka and pants, they will stand out more than your helmet. You can safely wear black boots with your helmet, too. Just don’t wear all black.

Black can be either cool or tacky depending on how you use it. As a rule of thumb, wearing all of any color from head to foot is usually tacky. One exception to that rule might be white, but wearing all white on the ski slopes has its disadvantages. For one thing, people might mistake you for a Ninja assassin. For another, if you get lost or have an accident, nobody will be able to see you. Wear something that contrasts with the color of the snow.

Skiing Tips For Your First Time On The Slopes

If you are considering skiing as a new hobby there are a number of things you may not be aware of for your first trip to the slopes. One important aspect of skiing is wearing the appropriate attire. Beginners need to be aware of safety hazards and carry on with caution.

Finding a resort with beginner terrain is usually the place to begin. These terrains are available at most ski resorts. There is usually no need to find a resort with expert slopes for your first time on the mountain.

For your first time on the slopes you do not have to immediately go out and buy ski clothes. Make sure you check your closet before you buy anything on your first ski trip. You may find a black helmet in your closet that can be of use to you on your first ski attempt.

Other items in your closet that will be of help are a warm turtleneck, sweater and winter jacket. Insulating pants are necessary to stay warm beneath waterproof snow pants. It is sensible to avoid wearing denim when skiing. Winter gloves are needed to help keep your hands warm.

Once you have made the decision to continue with skiing as a hobby you can then make the investment in professional ski gear. Important gear such as a ski helmet will be one of the items you decide on if you pursue skiing further.

Once you have your outfit put together you need to buy lift tickets. Depending on the resort you are visiting, the prices will differ. Some resorts will offer discounts at different times throughout the year, and for young children or seniors. Call ahead for details.

You will most likely be able to rent your equipment such as skis and boots from the resort. This is probably the safer option as opposed to borrowing an old pair. Making an investment in a ski lesson given by a professional can help you start your ski journey on the proper foot.

You will be working new muscles and areas of your body so it is important to nourish your body with liquids and snacks. Most importantly, stay safe and close to terrain you are familiar with. When all is said and done you can cozy up to a nice cup of hot chocolate and a delonghi space heater.

The Outdoors Is The Best Place To Take Your Family On Vacation

It’s vacation time and you want your family to experience a new adventure together, but you have no idea how to go about it. How about taking them on a camping or skiing trip. It is so important to take children into nature and let them experience it in real life, rather than teaching them from a book or the television.

Planning a trip such as this is really exciting for everyone, especially if you give them tasks to perform to help make it a special vacation. Sit and plan together from the start and this togetherness, will carry through on your trip as well. Don’t worry if the boys want to take their men’s sport watch along, they will need it to guide you along the way and to keep track of time. And let the girls take their digital book reader as well, you never know if might rain and they will have something to do that day.

We are partly to blame for our children’s inability and lack of luster to be in the outdoors, because we want our children home where we can see them and know that they are safe. So we get them internet, and computer games and phones to text each other and a myriad of other gadgets to keep them busy. It’s a noble idea, but it makes them lazy and takes them away from the outdoors.

The truth is that our children need to be outside more often. It will give them a better outlook on life as they intermingle with other people and animals. A trip to the zoo once a year will not cut it and they will not appreciate nature and all it has to offer them. We need to get our children back to being children again, playing outside and just being silly.

So you might be living near a ski resort or you could do a day trip to one, why not take your alpine skiing equipment along and make it a skiing trip as well. Combined with camping or just sleeping in a log cabin, this activity is guaranteed to bring the child out in you and for that matter, bring out the child in your children again. It provides hours of fun as they laugh at your attempts of jumping or just falling down in the snow.

The added bonus for the entire family is that you will get the needed Vitamin D which the sun provides us for free. Exposed it the sun’s UV rays for about 20 minutes every third day will give you enough to help your bodies absorb more calcium and control a normal blood level of calcium and phosphorus.

You can’t go wrong with an outdoor vacation it will bind and foster a better relationship with all family members.

Take Care of Your Eyes While Skiing

Alpine skiing, especially Lake Tahoe skiing or Breckenridge skiing,  has been one of the favorite winter past-times in the country for years. Each year, nearly 7 million citizens travel to the ski slopes. Other winter sports such as cross country skiing or ice hockey don’t even come close. Only the ever increasing in popularity sport of snowboarding approaches it with a little more than six million snowboarders in the country.

Skiing is not only great fun, it’s a fantastic exercise for all parts of the body. Skiing is excellent for toning up the upper leg muscles such as the thigh as well as the lower calf. A season of skiing will strengthen the shoulders and back and will help to trim your stomach. Skiing is also excellent aerobically. Experts estimate that an adult skiing with moderate effort, will burn anywhere from 300 to 500 calories an hour.

But in addition to its exercise benefits, Alpine skiing is also an exhilarating sport.  Nothing quite compares to it. Olympic caliber skiers can top 80 miles per hour. But for a novice, even skiing at 5 miles per hours is a thrill.

Skiers don’t often thing of this, but one of the most essential pieces of apparel when they’re on the slopes are goggles or sunglasses. And the best kind are the ones that are UV rates.

When you buy goggles or sunglasses that are UV rated, you are not buying sunglasses purely for style, even though stylish sunglasses are, of cousre, cool. You are buying them to protect your eyes. And that means sunglasses or goggles with a good UV protection rating. UV light can do real damage to the eyes ranging from simple sunblindness to major cataract problems. The best UV rated sunglasses are 100% UV protective and most of them are relatively inexpensive.

Now this does not means that if you, every so often, forget to put on your UV glasses that you are in grave danger of losing your eyesight. Researchers believe that it’s your eye’s continued exposure to sunlight over a period of time that actually does the damage. But, to be safe, it doesn’t hurt to wear them as often as possible.

Getting Ready To Hit The Slopes

One of the fun things about winter is that you get to buzz down the slopes at your chosen ski field at some point. Skiing is great fun and it is also wonderful exercise building up strong thighs and stomach muscles. Before you get to the ski chalet though, there are some things that you need to do to get ready for your vacation.

Skiing is very physical and demanding on your body especially the thighs. For this reason you should try to get in shape before your ski trip. You can do this by doing some aerobic fitness and work on squats and lunges at home. This simple preparation might help reduce sore muscles and even possible injuries.

A great little item to pack into your luggage for after you have been on the mountain all day is a homedics massager. This can soothe sore muscles and get them ready for the next day’s skiing adventure. It may also help to dissipate some of the lactic acid build up that can also lead to sore muscles.

Before you go on your trip you should get out your alpine skiing equipment and check it over. Anything that needs to be replaced should be done before your trip as things that go wrong on the mountain could lead to injury occurring. Also if you need repairs done or replacements of equipment while at the ski fields, this tends to be much more expensive.

The physical side of skiing is not the only fun part. The fashion on the mountain is also part of the appeal for many people. You do not have to spend a lot of money to revamp your look, you can change small items such as gloves, hats and goggles.

Head to your local ski shop or hop online to check out the current trends in ski wear and apres ski wear. Checking out the current fashions and following suit will ensure that you look hot on the piste. Off the mountain tights, layered clothing and brown boot are the current look – black is not the new black so it would seem. One of the really fun things about the ski fields is that you can be a little crazier with your fashions and no one gives you strange looks.

With a little preparation in advance for your next ski trip you can ensure that you feel great, look fabulous and have the time of your life zooming up and down the ski runs with your friends.

Your Special Vacation At A Ski Resort

If you have decided to go to a ski resort for a vacation, you may want to be sure that you book a room, and pack everything that you will need, especially your skis and warm clothing. If you plan to go by car make sure you budget enough for gas to get you there and back. If you plan to go by plane it is wise to book your flight in advance as the closer to the date in which you are leaving, the more expensive the plane tickets will be.

Packing your digital camera will let you take pictures or videos of your whole trip. You probably would love to have it along so that you will have something to share with others later. You may be meeting friends there or traveling with your family.

Once you get to the resort, you may wish to go to your room and unpack and head out right away. With all that crisp white snow waiting outside you might be looking at your digital sport watch while you wait for your friends or family to get ready for skiing too.

You might take the time while waiting for them to go over your ski equipment. Things like checking to make sure that your ski helmet still fits or that there are not any fraying straps. Also do not forget the snaps or buckles. You do not want to have one of them fail on the slopes. Taking a few seconds now will ensure that there will not be regrets later on.

Even if you have never been skiing before in your life, or you have, but do not have the skills for it. Ski resorts have instructors who are paid to teach you how to ski, or to help you increase your skiing skills. Most often these lessons are given on the beginner slopes. Often the beginner slopes are where families tend to enjoy spending their time. No matter your skill level, you can always enjoy a day or two on this slope.

You may be of more advanced skill levels and if that is the case there are ski lifts up to intermediate and expert hills. Ensure that a hill is not more advanced than you are able to handle or there may be serious problems. In no time at all you will be out on the hills and paths enjoying yourself with your friends and family. Your black helmet just a speck on the hills and paths as the wind blows past your face.

When you have all the fine details taken care of the only thing you will have to worry about is whether you enjoy yourself or not. The fresh air and good company will make this trip one to remember.

You Must Have Your Ski Boots Before You Buy Skis – Here’s Why

Have you been on your first few ski trips, used beginners ski gear and equipment rentals, and now understand why people like to own their own? If so, then you have probably decided that if you want like to learn more about skiing then purchasing your own ski gear in on your ‘to do’ list.

Now that you are ready to take the plunge and are deciding on your ski gear purchase, knowing a few things beforehand can help eliminate hassles down the road and prevent costly mistakes.

For starters, one of the most helpful rules to remember when shopping for ski gear is to purchase your ski boots before you even go looking for the right ski. The reason for this, is that the fit, comfort and support of the ski boot is much more important to your ski experience, and your boots will influence the skis and bindings you select.

Once you have found the right ski boots, you will then have a little bit of direction in choosing a set of skis, as well as other ski gear. You can then look for skis and bindings that are suitable to your skill level and which will work with your chosen boots. Taking expert advice here is important – they will know for instance that if you are a woman, your ski bindings for women should be set more to the front to accommodate a different center of gravity and skiing style.

Another aspect to consider when purchasing your ski gear is that different ski boots affect the performance of some skis. So, getting the ski that works the most effectively with the ski boots that you’ve got can easily boost your results.

Some of today’s equipment marketers recommend that you purchase bindings and ski boots from the same manufacturer, suggesting that they are only compatible with each other.  This is rarely the case however, but it may serve to enhance the combined performance of the ski gear.

There is certainly nothing wrong with purchasing all of your different components from different sources – and you can generally save a heap of money doing it that way.

Having comfortable boots that complement your other ski gear will make a huge difference to your skiing experience.  They will be more comfortable and safer, and will therefore allow you to stay on the slopes for longer – and isn’t that what you want?
