Attention All Skiers: Try Snowboarding!

Do you love winter? Or, more importantly, do you love spending time in the cold winter weather? If so, and you are looking for a great new activity to try this winter, consider snowboarding. For many people, the idea of snowboarding sounds dangerous, like it was only for crazy teenage boys. The idea of skiing down a large hill or mountain sounds scary enough and the idea of doing it with a snowboard sounds too hard to be tried. If these are your thoughts, you should think again. Whether you have been skiing for years or if you have never made it down a winter mountain, snowboarding can be a great way to spend winter days. If you have been a skier and are thinking of branching out into the world of snowboarding, congratulations. The best advice I can give you is to be patient. Because snowboarding is similar to skiing and yet very different, some people who ski well will find that snowboarding comes naturally and quickly while others will find the learning process grueling and frustrating. Stick with it because eventually the tricks of snowboarding can come to almost anyone. If you have never been a skier, have no fear. Having a skiing background is not always necessary or even beneficial in learning snowboarding skills. You, a non-ski expert, may actually pick up the techniques of snowboarding much easier than your skier friends. After some time you may find that snowboarding fits you like a glove.

Allow me to offer a couple of words of advice to anyone, ski expert or not, that desires to enter the world of snowboarding. First, do not expect to jump on a board and pick up the skill all on your own. Most people will benefit greatly from taking snowboarding lessons at least to learn the basics of the sport. So do not hesitate to sign yourself up for a lesson or two before you head out to the slopes. A second and perhaps more important piece of advice is simple: rent. Resist that temptation to run out and buy the latest board and snowboarding gear just to look like a seasoned pro on the slopes. On your first few times out you should rent equipment and take the time to learn what kinds of boards best meet your needs. By renting you can avoid making a costly mistake that will leave you frustrated later. So, whether you have been skiing for years or not, when winter comes around again make the choice to learn a new skill. Who knows, snowboarding could fast become your favorite source of winter fun.

Snowbikers Set To Emerge on Ski Slopes This Year

Winter sports fans are in for a treat this year as a little known activity has been gathering momentum and will make its mark properly this season. The sport of snowbiking involves traveling down a traditional ski run on a modified bicycle. People have been trying to ride their bikes down a snowy run for years, but road bikes were never cut out for very low friction surfaces. Over the years many snowboard and ski enthusiasts have been working on newer designs in the hope of discovering something that worked. Sadly, many of the earlier models were bulky and difficult to steer, and it has only been in the last few seasons that a snowbike has been developed that really works.

A Canadian firm currently offers the best bike on the market and they have announced the first snowbike world championship will take place next year. Rather than being built for tricks or jumps, snowbikes are normally purpose-built for control and carving ability. This will be reflected in the world championship events that will be based around slalom and speed competitions. Most of the snowbikes on the market have adopted a shape and design like a snowmobile. Steering comes in the form of a front-mounted large blade which is attached to handlebars, and the bike is lower to the ground than conventional bikes. This gives the rider much better steering control, but only one blade is needed as snowbikes are a lot lighter and do not travel as fast as snowmobiles.

Snowbike manufactures admit that snowbiking is not the easiest of extreme sports to master, but that it is well worth putting in the hours to master. Apparently learning how to snowbike shares similarities with learning to ride traditional mountain bikes. Although a very different movement and balance is needed, once you learn the skills, it will be something you never forgot. Now that adult snowbikes have proved a success, women’s and children’s snowbikes are starting to be manufactured. There are also multiple extras now, such as stabilisers, headlights and even horns.

Although many confident skiers and snowboarders will be keen to try out the snowbikes on the steeper and more difficult runs, it is advised that everyone should have a go on learner slopes first. Snowbikes are much harder to stop than snowboards or skis, and if you haven’t mastered the technique you will not only be risking your own safety, but you may be endangering the safety of other winter sports enthusiasts also.

In fact there have been a number of ski resorts in America who have banned snowbiking from their slopes until they have done their own safety tests. The majority of locations however are understanding to snowbikers, but still suggest that everyone is careful until we know just how safe they are. Whatever resorts think of the bikes, with a reported 30,000 snowbikers worldwide, this one seems like a trend that is going to stick (or slide as the case may be).

The Rise of The Snowbike

Winter sports fans are in for a treat this year as a little known activity has been gathering momentum and will make its mark properly this season.  Snowbiking is basically the sport of travelling down a snowy piste on a modified bike. People have been trying to ride their bikes down a snowy run for years, but road bikes were never cut out for very low friction surfaces. For many years ski and snowboard fans have been working on advancing designs in the hope of developing something that worked. After years of trial and error, and a few accidents, a snowbike design was finally conceived that was both functional and practical.

The best snowbike on the market is produced by a Canadian company, and they are so confident that the sport will be a huge hit, that they are arranging the first even world championship for 2010. Snowbikes are not really freestyle or jumping pieces or equipment, but instead built for speed and manoeuvrability. This will be reflected in the world championship events that will be based around slalom and speed competitions. The large majority of snowbikes that have succeeded in the market share many characteristics with snowmobiles. They are lower to the ground than normal bikes and have a blade at the front of the bike attached to the steering column. This gives the rider much better steering control, but only one blade is needed as snowbikes are a lot lighter and do not travel as fast as snowmobiles.

Snowbike manufactures admit that snowbiking is not the easiest of extreme sports to master, but that it is well worth putting in the hours to master. Apparently learning how to snowbike shares similarities with learning to ride normal mountain bikes. Although a very different movement and balance is needed, once you learn the skills, it will be something you never forgot. Now that adult snowbikes have proved a success, women’s and children’s snowbikes are starting to be manufactured. They also come with some additionally safety features including padded framing and stabilisers.

Given the nature of many daredevil snowboarders and skiers, it is likely that some will attempted the most difficult mountain runs on the snowbikes without much practice, something not advised by snowbike manufactures or ski resort owners.

Most resorts however are allowing snowbikers, but recommending that people take care when using them and when around other people using them. Despite the mild controversy surrounding the sport, it doesn’t seem to be putting people off giving it a go, and there are now a predicted 40,000 snowbikers in the USA alone.

Snowbiking – The Extreme Sport of 2010

There has been a winter sport that has been brewing under the surface for a few years now, and is set to explode on the scene properly this season. The sport of snowbiking involves traveling down a traditional ski run on a modified bicycle. The idea was conceived over 50 years ago, but people found that using a conventional bike was ineffective and rather dangerous. Over the years many snowboard and ski enthusiasts have been working on newer designs in the hope of discovering something that worked. Sadly, many of the earlier models were bulky and difficult to steer, and it has only been in the last few seasons that a snowbike has been developed that really works.

A world championship event has already been announced for 2010 by a company based in Canada, who are the biggest producers of snowbikes in the world. Rather than being built for tricks or jumps, snowbikes are normally purpose-built for control and carving ability. This will be reflected in the world championship events that will be based around slalom and speed competitions. Most of the snowbikes on the market have adopted a shape and design like a snowmobile. They maintain a lower centre of gravity and are steered using a bladed mounted to the front which can dig into the snow to change direction.

It is a skill that takes a little while to get right, but it has a steep learning curve and once you’ve mastered it you won’t lose it.Now that adult snowbikes have proved a success, women’s and children’s snowbikes are starting to be manufactured. They also come with some additionally safety features including padded framing and stabilisers.

Certain American ski resorts in fact have prohibited snowbikers on their slopes until more is known about the safety of the things. A large majority of slopes have opened their doors to snowbikes though, stating that if used responsibly, they are no more dangerous than any other winter sport. Whether ski resorts like snowbikes or not, it seems that the popularity of the sport will continue to increase and we could even see some big extreme sports brands enter the market very soon.

Manufacturers Begin To Devote More Attention To Women Snowboarders Clothing

As more and more women learn how to snowboard and enter the snowboarding culture, manufacturers have made note of the market and begun to create snowboarding products specifically for that demographic.

If you look back to only a few years ago, most women were principally making use of men’s snowboards, bindings, and other equipment – today you’ll find many types of snowboarding created specifically for women. And, the same is true in the  clothing realm.

Today, you’ll find a great many women sports clothing lines that are committed solely to servicing the women’s market. A fundamental difference in a man’s and best womens snowboard jacket is that the men’s jackets lean towards plain and solid colors while a womens snowboard jacket comes in more of a variety of colors.

The popular reason for this is that women are usually assumed, and with much justification, to be mucn more attuned to colors then men. After all, it’s a fact that a significant greater number of men are color blind than are women. Also, women are much less likely to be color-blind than men.

But you also want to choose a woman’s snowboard jacket on style. It should be adjusted to fit the shape of a woman – which, among other things, means a tapered waist and more of a form fitting look.

Don’t feel that you always have to be totally up to date in your styles. After all, some people where the same apparel year after year. If you’re willing to be just a bit out of date, simply wait until the new clothing lines come out before the new snowboarding season and you’ll be able to pick up great discounts from the previous season. You’ll also find that there’s a good deal of activity on auction site among snowboarders who are selling their old clothing or putting them up for bids because they’ve either outgrown them, have left the sport, or are simply looking to upgrade themselves.

In addition to saving on clothing, you’ll also find great deals on womens snowboards, boots, and even snowboards from some of the major manufacturers such as Burton, Ride, K2, and others.

Clothing Functionality Takes Center Stage For Women Snowboarders

Snowboarding is a fantastic sport. It gets you out in the fresh air in the winter times and keeps cabin fever far away from you. And more and more women are coming into the sport every year. As they do so, one of the things that they’re learning is dressing properly for the sport. As more and more people [learn to snowboard], the most important thing is to dress in layers.

When dressing for snowboarding, you need to essentially be worried about 3 layers. The layer next to your skin, the outer layer, and the intermediate layers – of which there can be more than one.

The clothing layer immediately touching the skin is the most important for your comfort. Ideally, it’ll be composed of a material that will wick the sweat  away from the body. This means that as you begin to sweat, which you undoubtedly will once you’ve been do snowboarding tricks for a while, the sweat won’t stay next to your body. Instead it’ll be absorbed back into the material and the middle layers.

There are certain types of materials that have this ability and these are the types that you want next to your skin. They include materials such as polypropylene and synthetic polyester as well as natural materials such as wool. Materials such as cotton are extremely bad choices for the skin layer as cotton will keep the moisture firmly next to your body, making you more susceptible to the cold and hypothermia.

Your outer clothing layer is important as well. Keeping moisture from dampening your inner clothing layers is the key to dressing for comfort. And that’s why it’s important that the outer layers be water resistant.

In fact, snowboard pants, pro womens snowboard jacket, womens snowboards bindings, and so on that are not water resistant are not even worth looking at. That rules out things such as jeans and other casual clothes as well.

The one thing that you don’t want happening is for your outer layer of apparel soaking up and retaining water from the melting snow.

As far as the middle layers of clothing, they are less important. Although you should choose thinner materials over thick, as the entire point of layering is to allow you the luxury of adding on or taking off clothing as required. The middle layers should be a bit oversized, however, as that allows more air to be trapped between the layers, aiding in their insulation abilities.

Enjoy Snowboarding On Slopes

Are you interested in snowboarding, but aren’t quite ready to hit the slopes? Do you want to make sure that you practice as much as you can during the off-season? If you want to be able to get a better idea of what to expect while you’re boarding, or want to perfect your coordination skills, you may want to check out the video game 1080 Snowboarding. This game is a competitive take on the sport, and can even teach you how to perform boarding tricks.

There are five snowboard players competing per game, and you use the controls to execute various moves in order to get to the next of eight levels. There are six modes for each player in 1080 Snowboarding, so you can choose whether or not you want to race with the other players, if you would like to be timed during the game, and how many players you want to race against. When you use the trick modes (trick attack and contest), you’ll receive points for the tricks your player performs, and when you’re in contest mode, you’ll have to display your snowboarding skills while going past flags on the course to gain points.

There are five characters for you to choose from when you’re preparing to play a game of 1080 Snowboarding. There are two players from Japan, one from Canada, one from the U.S. and one from the U.K. Each of the virtual players has different skills and abilities, so one player may be better suited for a certain level of the game, or can perform a certain set of snowboarding tricks with more precision. Each of the players also has individual stats, so that you feel like you’re guiding an actual athlete through the video game.

Nintendo, the makers of the game, did such a great job with making the modes and players of the game realistic that 1080 Snowboarding was awarded the Interactive Achievement Award from the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences in the late 1990s. A sequel to 1080 Snowboarding, which is called 1080 Avalanche, was later released in 2003 for Nintendo Game Cube.

Once you’ve gotten familiar with the video game, you may feel a little more confident when it comes to the actual sport. Be sure to study the moves of the players and find out what your physical strengths and weaknesses are while playing the game, so you’ll be ready, so you’ll be ready to get back out in the snow and show your skills. For more information on snowboarding, as well as a guide on how to play or purchase the game, visit www.nintendo.com and www.snowboarding.com.

Are The Skills and Fitness of Surfing Transferable To Snowboarding?

Surfing a break in Oahu
Image via Wikipedia

When it comes to popular extreme sports, snowboarding and surfing are right up their at the top of the list. Despite the fact these two sports couldn’t be further away from each other in terms of climate needed and location, a lot of people still enjoy taking part in both sports. But does the fitness and skill sets that you pick up taking part in one sport, go any way to help you in the other? Let us take a look at three important elements that these sports require.

Upper Body Fitness. As any surfer will tell you, if you haven’t got great upper body fitness, there is not much point even getting in the water. You need endurance in order to repetitively paddle surfboards out to see against breaking waves, and power is need in the ‘pop-up’ phase of getting upright on the board when you have caught a wave. Snowboarding however, does not demand anywhere near as from the upper body, as it is only really used for balance and core-stability support

Timing. If you want to perform either of these sports well, then good timing is a must. Timing your turns just right in snowboarding isn’t easy, especially on the steeper runs, and unless you have got it sussed, you can quite easily be eating snow before you know it. Likewise, catching a wave right requires great timing and knowing when to carve the board to pick up speed is a skill that can take years to learn.

Lower Body Strength & Agility. Whilst both sports do require a degree lower body fitness and co-ordination, it is snowboarding that demands the most from the legs. Snowboards require great skill and agility to turn and carve, and if your leg muscles are not in good condition you will simply not be able to ride well. However, don’t think the lower body can be neglected in surfing, your legs and core need to be strong and flexible, even just to stand up.
